Triton-- is a sea god similar to Nereus, Glaucus and Phorcys. He is said to be the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite and the brother of Rhode. Although his domain was generally the entire sea he was thought of in late legends to be the god of Tritonis in Libya.

According to legend Triton was part of the expedition of the Argonauts. Dressed as Eurypylus, he gave a peice of earth to Euphemus as apresent for his kindness and indicated to the sailors the route to take in order to regain the Mediterranean. He also appeared in a local Boeotian legend where it was said that Triton attacked the local women while they were bathing in the lake during the festival of Dionysus.

Drawn by the smell of wine he went up to the shore of a lake and drank it. He fell asleep there and was killed by an ax. This was the most reasonable conclusion of the victory of Dionysus over the sea god.
